Description

Engineered for demanding industrial applications, these mercury displacement relays deliver precise, reliable switching in environments with extreme temperatures, dust, and moisture. Built with meticulous care and cleanliness protocols, each unit provides consistent performance where conventional devices can struggle.

Why choose mercury displacement relays:

  • Fast, repeatable control: Operate in 50 ms, release in 80 ms for responsive circuit management.
  • Low contact resistance: As low as 0.003 Ω (35 A), 0.002 Ω (60 A), and 0.001 Ω (100 A)* for cooler operation and minimal losses.
  • Rugged longevity: Rated for millions of cycles with a dielectric withstand of 2500 Vac RMS and a -35°C to 85°C temperature range.
  • Secure connections: Coil terminals use #6 binding head screws. Load terminals feature pressure connectors (A.W.G. #4–#14 for 35 A; A.W.G. #2–#8 for 60 A).
  • Certifications: UL Listed (File #E62767) and C.S.A. (File #LR41198) for N.O. units; auxiliary devices approved for Class I, Groups A, B, C, D, Division 2 (UL File #E71867). For hazardous locations, add the suffix -X to the part number.

Mercury-to-metal contactor operation:

Hermetically sealed glass isolates the load terminals. A ceramic-insulated, magnetically actuated plunger rides on a mercury pool. When the coil is energized, the plunger displaces the mercury to contact the electrode, closing the circuit between top and bottom load terminals within the stainless steel can.

Application versatility:

  • AC resistive loads up to 600V
  • AC inductive loads (P.F. ≥ 0.4)
  • General purpose loads (P.F. ≥ 0.7)
  • DC resistive heating at common voltages
  • Tungsten lamp loads with high inrush
  • Single- and three-phase motor loads (HP ratings per pole and amp class)

Fusing and protection:

Proper fusing is required. Use fast-acting UL Class RK-1 and Class J, or semiconductor I2t low-peak fuses to limit short-circuit currents. After any fault event, inspect and monitor for concealed damage that could affect performance.

IMERC State Restrictions:

Due to mercury-added product regulations, these items cannot be shipped to Connecticut (CT), Minnesota (MN), Maine (ME), Massachusetts (MA), New Hampshire (NH), New York (NY), Rhode Island (RI), or Vermont (VT). Exemptions may apply for replacement in equipment originally manufactured with mercury devices; contact us for details.
